Sherman (NY) – The Slyboots School of Music and Dance will host the 12th anniversary Slyfest three day music and art festival featuring world class performances, interactive workshops, musician panels and nightly light shows, artistic fires and parades through the campgrounds. Slyfest began in 2005 in Fredonia, NY. Now in its 12th year, Slyfest showcases an amazing line up of world class musicians, dancers and educators each bringing a truly unique and rare experience to Western New York.
Notably, this years event will showcase internationally renowned headliners; The Slyboots Circus, Toubab Krewe, Consider the Source, The Mike Dillon Band, DJ Logic and Arthur Lipner.
About Slyboots School of Music Art and Dance
The Slyboots School of Music, Art & Dance is an international touring enterprise– based in Buffalo, NY– that is dedicated to promoting positive social change through cultural arts education and performance. Every year Slyboots facilitates study abroad programs for students from Upstate New York to study drumming and dancing in West Africa. In the winter months Slyboots facilitates educational tours with drum and dance troupes from West Africa to perform at colleges, universities, schools and clubs all over the US. Slyboots has helped to expose an estimated 40,000 students to cultural arts education each year since 2005.

About Toubab Krewe
Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound.
Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release, TK2, (September 7, 2010 on Nat Geo Music). What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Terrence Houston (drums), Drew Heller (guitar, piano, fiddle), David Pransky (bass, guitar), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, Congas, percussion) have wrought on TK2 reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their studio debut.
This is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview, something they’ve exhibited in their half decade of heavy gigging, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Rothbury and Wakarusa, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as Festival In The Desert in Mali. About DJ Logic
The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of DJ LOGIC, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by crossing genres and mixing his sound across the map. As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablist’s, DJ LOGIC is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip – hop realms and is considered by most as a highly respected session musician and an innovative bandleader.
Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has been amassing a veritable mountain of collaborations, including full fledged bands with members of BLUES TRAVELER (THE JOHN POPPER PROJECT FEATURING DJ LOGIC), a trio with STEVE MOLITZ & FREEKBASS (HEADTRONICS), a jazz project with Georgian prodigy BEKA GOCHIASVILI, to being a member of the Grammy winning Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra’s The Offense of the Drum album. About Consider the Source
NYC trio Consider the Source defy easy description. If intergalactic beings of pure energy, after initiation into an order of whirling dervishes, built some kind of pan-dimensional booty-shaking engine, powered by psychedelics and abstract math, it’d probably just sound like a CTS tribute band. Drawing from progressive rock, fusion and jazz, with alien sounds soaked in Indian and Middle Eastern styles, CTS blends disparate parts into a striking, utterly original whole. Dubbed “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Fusion”, the band’s music strikes a rare balance between cerebral and emotional, intellectual and primal. A relentless touring schedule has won the band a fervent following from California to Israel, with fans ranging from jam-band hippies and jazz cats to corpse-painted headbangers and prog geeks.
Formed in 2004, Consider the Source features Gabriel Marin on fretless double-neck guitar, bassist John Ferrara, and drummer/percussionist Jeff Mann. Called “the guiding light for his generation of six-stringers”, Marin channels the mystical fury of McLaughlin and Coltrane into wailing melodies, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and boneshaking riffs. With a background in classical musics both Eurpoean and Indian, and an instinct for avant-jazz and destructive metal, Marin’s hypnotic fusion of styles is ever unpredictable. Ferrara’s propulsive, percussive attack, equally suited to simple grooves and impossible chords, can ground the music or launch it into space. His madcap gumbo of slap bass, Indian rhythms, earthy minimalism and complex tapping constantly pushes into strange new worlds, whilst still dropping thick booty-clap beats. Underneath them lies Mann’s rolling thunder; dense rhythmic architecture built from pure swagger and bounce. Half double-bass prog-metal, half crackle-pop Buddy Rich swing, with African and Balkan swirls, Mann’s muscular, freewheeling polyrhythms are the engine fuel for Consider’s multiversal mischief. Even when not improvising, Consider’s music is always a conversation, a roiling stew of dynamic interplay. Each member of Consider the Source alternately leads and follows, spars and assists; in any single song, alliances are made and broken, bargains struck and divorces finalized.
Touring from coast to coast, as well as Europe and the Middle East, has not only earned the band thousands of fans, but has allowed them to perform with a wide variety of well-known artists, including Victor Wooten, Wayne Krantz, King Crimson Projekt, Kris Myers (Umphrey’s McGee), Wyclef Jean, Andy Statman, Matt Darriau (Paradox Trio), Oteil Burbridge, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Dumpstaphunk, Keller Williams, George Porter, Jr., Jeff Sipe, Panzerballet (Germany), Eatliz (Israel), Freak Kitchen (Sweden), Morglbl (France), and many others. About Mike Dillon
How many artists have been praised a “punk rock provocateur,” “jazz vibraphone visionary,” and “percussion virtuoso” in the same sentence? There’s only one: Mike Dillon. Whether through his affiliation with artists like Les Claypool, Primus, Rickie Lee Jones, and Ani Difranco, or collaborations such as Nolatet, Garage a Trois, The Dead Kenny G’s, Critters Buggin or bands he has led, including Mike Dillon Band, Mike Dillon’s New Orleans Punk Rock Percussion Consortium, Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX, the Texas-native has set his own standard for 25 years now.
Over the past decade, Mike Dillon has released a number of acclaimed albums, intertwining a range of influences from Zappa-esque eccentricity to Fishbone punk funk, D.C. Go-Go to Milt Jackson-influenced vibraphone majesty. Never before, however, has he recorded music so personal and committed to a sustained mood as his latest album, Functioning Broke. The recording finds Dillon solo on vibraphone and various percussion, building each track into its own minimalist, but multi-dimensional auditory landscape.
The current version of the Mike Dillon Band features guitarist Cliff Hines, Bassist Nathan Lambertson and a rotating cast of drummers including Claude Coleman Jr. (Ween), Simon Lott, G. Maxwell, Doug Belote and Paul Thibodeaux. With this line up, Dillon has continued exploring the connection between New Orleans street beats, Ska, funk, Hardcore and jazz. The band will release a new record in February 2017 titled, “Life is not a Football.” Produced in New Orleans by Richard Maloney and Dillon with engineers Rick Nelson and Robert Mercurio, this album sounds like a Spotted Cat trad band that grew up playing Dead Kennedys and invited Captain Beefheart over for a dinner cooked by Thelonious Monk. The Mike Dillon Band has supported acts like Galactic, The Revivalists, Clutch, Primus, and Fishbone, while continuing to play music festivals and in cities across the U.S.
In 2016, the Gambit’s Big Easy Awards named Mike Dillon “Performer of the Year” and the Mike Dillon Band “Best Punk/Metal Band” in New Orleans. Living in New Orleans for over 10 years now, when not on the road with Rickie Lee Jones, Nolatet, or the Mike Dillon Band, Mike resides in the Musician’s Village with his fiancee, Jennifer Francino.

Arthur Lipner’s career has spanned three decades and is going stronger than ever since he began
performing professionally at age 14. He has appeared in 25 countries. Arthur’s live performances and
recordings convey an exuberant drive of creativity and depth. jazzenews.com (London) said, “Arthur Lipner
occupies a prominent role in the foregrounding of vibraphone and marimba in jazz and popular music.” All
Music called him “an extremely melodic and creative jazz/worldbeat-conscious vibes artist.”
Venues at which Arthur has appeared is a global trek to foreign cultures. Aside from concert halls, jazz
clubs/recording studios around the world and almost 70 trips overseas, he has performed with Tuvan
Throat Singers from Russia, The National Dance Company of Ghana in a small rural village, in the streets of
Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, in Chiapas Mexico’s “Marimba Park”, at the Royal Palace in Marrakesh, in the
mountains of Norway on an ice xylophone he constructed with award-winning ice sculptor Bill Covitz, and
more. The story of his inner and outer journeys are featured in the documentary TALKING STICKS (2016).
Outreach partnerships for the film have been set up with The Mexican Consulate in NYC, a music
conservatory for underprivileged children in Sao Paulo, and The Dagara Music Centre in Medie, Ghana.

Arthur has appeared on almost 50 albums, including nine of his own projects. His most recent release is
“Two Hands, One Heart” (2015), a “Best Of” collection of his favorite tracks recorded during the 25-year
period 1990-2015. This double album includes 40 musicians, including some of NYC’s top session players.
His prior release, “Brasilian Vibes” (2010) was nominated for Album Of The Year by the Brasilian Press
Awards. In 2014 he recorded steel drums for the United Airlines Inflight Safety Video, heard by thousands
each day. In 2016/2017 he recorded solo seven albums for Solo Sounds Records. All released in 2017,
these are uniquely-conceived interpretations of classic rock, jazz and pop releases performed on vibes,
marimba and steel pans.
As a soloist and bandleader Lipner has been to most of the United States and 25 foreign countries including
Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, England, Scotland, Morocco, Malaysia, the
Caribbean and many more. He premiered his concerto MALLET FANTASIA with the Nat’l Symphony of Brazil
with two concerts in Rio de Janeiro. In 2011, Arthur performed on Programa do Jo, the Brazilian equivalent
of the USA’s David Letterman Show. He has appeared at many festivals around the world. October 2017
will mark his 19th tour to Brazil.
Arthur has presented over 300 workshops on six continents, including The Juilliard School (NYC), Yale
University, Sweelink Conservatory (Amsterdam), Royal College (London) and Sydney Conservatorium. He
has been on the Faculty of The Brabants Conservatory (Tilburg, Holland), Univ. of Bridgeport, Drummers
Collective (NYC) and SUNY Purchase. From 2000-2008 Lipner served on the Board of Directors of The
Percussive Arts Society.
Almost 100 of Arthur’s compositions have been released on recordings. His music has been used on radio,
film and tv soundtracks in such places as Finland, Japan, Belgium, The Netherlands, and England. Arthur
has written two widely-adopted method books, THE VIBES REAL BOOK (1996) and “Jazz Mallets: IN
SESSION” (2000), the first-ever play-along book for vibes and marimba. All Lipner recordings and

Vibraphone virtuoso, Arthur Lipner, will be returning to Slyfest 12 at The Heron with this years winner of the Brazilian Press Award- Nanny Assis. Singer, percussionist, song-writer and Bahia native Nanny Assis is a hard talent to define. He started his career as a drummer and percussionist, but quickly developed into a brilliant multiform musician. For his multi-faceted talents, Nanny has developed an international reputation as a signature voice in Brazilian music. Sought after by world-class musicians for his mastery of Brazilian Jazz, Afro-Brazilian music and popular and folkloric music from his homeland, Nanny continues to delight audiences from Bahia, to New York, to Europe with his buoyant, rhythmic sound.
